Fergal McManus is Brookmount Infrastructure’s Founder and Co-director. He has over 25 years’ experience in utilities and is an expert in complex infrastructure design, installation and relocation.
Fergal founded Brookmount Infrastructure in 2017 to provide comprehensive Level 1 ASP electrical, civil engineering and communication utility solutions – with the quality and service he has prided himself on for over twenty years.
“My father was in utilities for 35 years in England and then the north of Ireland, and my brother is in utilities, so I grew up around the industry. I’ve been in utilities myself now since 1995 and worked in multiple sectors with several of the major companies.”
Among those is CPB, the Australasian construction company of the CIMIC Group, and now one of Brookmount Infrastructure’s valued clients. Fergal oversaw utility infrastructure for the WestConnex M5 Stage 2. It was a mammoth project, which involved complete utility design and construction.
“I was responsible for all utilities design, which involved identifying a full list of clashes and advising treatment (either protection, relocation or leaving in situ). I oversaw a team of 16 or 17 through the project duration from design through final construction.”
Laying the Brookmount foundation
After working with CPB, Fergal fulfilled his long-term ambition of starting his own company.
“One reason you start a company is to feel pride and satisfaction in what you do. My life ambition was to be at the top of the game. I had that entrepreneurial drive from a young age, seeing my family and friends’ businesses. Working for CPB was the pinnacle of my working career, but the next step was to establish Brookmount.”
Fergal believes starting your own business brings enormous challenges – and rewards.
“It opens up a whole series of challenges and other areas you need to be on top of, from marketing to business operations to the pressure of tendering. On the other hand, I’ve always liked playing around with IT for instance, and now I’m enjoying looking at new ways of working – with new software for automation or processes for sustainability.”
Team and client-focused
Another aspect Fergal enjoys is the interaction with the team and clients. “I really enjoy building long-term relationships with our team and our customers. You get to meet a lot of people with diverse personalities, and I love that interaction.”
Fergal spends most of his time outside work with his young family or enjoying some quality Irish traditions – “darts, snooker, going out and having a craic,” he laughs. His love of travel also reflects his love of new destinations… and challenges.
“Obviously, I think it’s really important to enjoy a challenge, and that’s one of the main drivers with what I do.
I love the helter-skelter pace of areas including project management, health and safety – which is paramount – and commercial projects. It’s really satisfying to be able to solve a problem and provide an outstanding solution.”
